Abstract
In this article, we are addressing the special meaning of regret expressed in the English verb miss. A component analysis of the content of the intentional state miss shows that it is derived from the content of the simpler intentional state sorry. Hence, we can conclude that the meaning of the word miss is the result of semantic derivation of the meaning of the predicative sorry. The difference between the intentional states expressed by the word sorry, on the one hand, and the verb miss, on the other, lies in the conditions for satisfying the intention of the speaking subject.
