Abstract
The article examines the modern Izhorian language, represented by two surviving dialects, in the context of geographically and genetically similar languages ​​- Vodian and Ingrian Finnish. On the basis of a number of criteria (linguistic and extralinguistic), an attempt is made to identify such features of the Izhorian language that would be represented in both of its dialects, but would be absent in neighboring idioms, that is, would allow one to speak about a single Izhorian language. The analysis shows how conventional the concept of "language" becomes in the situation of the linguistic continuum formed as a result of various divergent and convergent processes. The main part of the presented material was collected in the course of the author's field work on the territory of Ingermanland over the past few years.
