- Abstract
- The work was written in connection with the articles of M.I. Shapira and A.V. Smooth, dedicated to the possibilities of applying exact methods in the humanities; both articles were published in "Questions of Linguistics" - the first in 2005, the second, sharply polemical in relation to the first, in 2007. The concept of "accuracy" is analyzed as applied to the sciences of the humanities. A number of examples demonstrate the complexity of truly accurate, rigorous, formal constructions in linguistics in particular and in philology in general. The main methodological theses outlined in Shapir's article are discussed in connection with Gladkiy's reaction to them; in most cases, the author of this work agrees with Shapir, although on some points he fundamentally disagrees with him. The conclusion is drawn about the fruitfulness of M.I. Shapir of the prospects of mathematics in the field of building a general theory in the humanities and the doubtfulness of the "natural-scientific" optimism of A.V. Smooth about this.
