Abstract

The article considers the role of literature in the process of making national identity of the Slovenian people. The historical fate of the Slovenes became the root cause of the special mission that literature carried out: through the literary word they were realising the unity of their nation. For several centuries, the most important literature’s objective had been self-identification, while its principal function the one of national security. Due to the extraordinary position of literature within national mythology and preservation of the «code» of the nation, the cultural and ideological pressure from the authorities of any state, which the Slovenian lands had been incorporated into, was amortised.
