Abstract
The purpose of this article consists in making summary of the ideas, expressed in political panel, organized during the scientific conference to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Institute for Latin America of Russian Academy of Science. The scholars of the Institute and their guests discussed problems of political modernization, achievements and weak points of the democracy in Latin America and proposed the typology of the existing political regimes. The object of special attention were the changing role of the State in new historical conditions and its relationships with the civil society. The national, ethnic, and gender problems were also analyzed. The regional tendencies were compared with the numerous case studies.
