Abstract
The article examines the situation around the establishment of such regional structure as East Asian Community (EAC). Since its inception the idea of EAC got support of a number of Asian countries but its implementation was delayed. In an effort to discover the causes of this the author pays particular attention to the discrepancy between the approaches of Japan and China as the leading regional powers as well as the role of the United States that are not interested in creating a structure in which their participation is not envisaged.
