Abstract
A comprehensive analysis of the fable «Once upon a time there was a cockroach.» helps identify a striking unity and interconnection of themes and ideas of Dostoevsky’s later works, as well as close links between the comic, dramatic and philosophical aspects of his literary heritage. The comic and parody fable is to (as its author pretends) deal with existential issues about the meaning of human life in the universe - a question «Why» directed at the Creator. This is the only instance when Dostoevsky turns to genres and stylistics of the Russian poetry of the 18th century. As a result, we are faced with an interesting phenomenon of a double parody, for what is being parodied is the genre of a fable which is in itself a parody of «higher» genres, playfully combining opposite stylistic elements. This is stressed by Lebjadkin comparing himself with Derzhavin. By «a cockroach from his childhood» Lebjadkin implies himself, with two dominating characteristic features: tragic fate and comic behavior.
