Abstract
The article puts under consideration the particular problem of the role of Russian acting as the most important factor operating both Russian state consolidation and its peoples' cultural, educational and scientifi c development. Functions of the Russian language in the XIX-XX centuries are being surveyed in the context of the political events of the corresponding periods and traditional ethnic pluralism of the Russian society. Nowadays history formulates the lessons to be learned. New crucial problem which has already arisen resulting from modern geopolitical situation - the problem of the protection of Russian language geographical space covered by its cultural infl uence factor.
