Abstract
The story «Daryushka. The sketch of a Russian woman pilgrim’s life» by S.I. Snesoreva (1864) holds a special place in Russian literature. Being an evidence of Church life of St. Petersburg of the middle XIX century, in addition to its historiographical significance it represents the first attempt to consider artistically the phenomenon of Russian pilgrimage. The prevailing interpretation of the motif of the wanderer in West-European literature was unsuitable for creating an image of the Russian pilgrim. So in sixties of 19th century began the process of reinterpretation and overcoming of the romantic templates. S.I. Snessoreva found artistic techniques organically suited to the elaboration of this subject. Based on the records real conversations with nun Isidora that had been made by Snessoreva’s son, she created the outstanding story that combines the elements of narration, literary anecdotes and memoirs. The story «Daryushka» predetermined in many aspects the further understanding of this theme in the prose of N. S. Leskov, St. Seraphim Chichagov and other Russian secular and religious writers.
