Abstract
The theory of the process of civilization by N. Elias is used to summarize the methodological development of the sociological discipline. It is shown that in Russia this process stopped after the re-institutionalization of sociology in the 1960s. The comparative material suggests that structural factors (the structure of the labor market, the organization of professional periodicals, etc.) are responsible for lowering the level of disciplinary “civility”.
