Abstract
The object of work is the Russian compound unions, or even then. They "represent a combination of two or more elements, each of which simultaneously exists in the language and as a separate word" [Grammar-80: 716]. Unions are subjected to compositional analysis, in particular, the contribution to the semantics of the union of the element to is revealed. It is demonstrated that the elements in these units are not identical to the corresponding individual words, but at the same time retain their main semantic components. Compositional analysis of compound function words allows one to simulate real semantic processes, and besides, it gives an answer to some particular questions (for example, why are units or even so in some contexts synonymous).
