- Abstract
- The construction of Russian vocalism is based on two gradual oppositions: opposition in three degrees of ascent (upper, middle and lower) and opposition in the degree of labialization (non-labialized, weakly labialized [o] and strongly labialized [y]). The proposed solution makes it possible to interpret literary acania in a synchronous plan as the elimination of the middle term of the gradual opposition according to the degree of ascent / a - o - y /> / a - y /. Other transformations of Russian unstressed vocalism can also be explained. The proposed phonological interpretation of Russian vocalism allows us to see in modern vowel neutralizations not only processes that are strictly positionally determined, but also phenomena that can be explained by revealing the internal structure of phonological units involved in neutralization. This is another step towards the convergence between the Moscow and Prague phonological schools.
