- Abstract
- The article discusses the linguistic views of J.G. Hamann, an outstanding language theorist and philosopher who had a significant impact on the formation of linguistics in Germany in the 18th century, in particular on the work of I.G. Herder, W. von Humboldt, I.V. von Goethe, prominent representatives of the German Enlightenment. Hamann's views on the essence and origin of language, its impact on the picture of the world of its speakers, the relationship between language and religion are analyzed against a broad background of linguistic and philosophical discussions in European and Germanic linguistics of the second half of the 18th century.
