- Abstract
- The article is devoted to the problems associated with the need to clarify the lexical meanings of foreign language neologisms that have entered the vocabulary of the Russian language in the last two decades. Words are analyzed, cited as examples, seemingly confirming the reliability of the well-known hypotheses about the "prestige" of the borrowed word as one of the reasons for the intensification of the borrowing process, as well as about the "rise in rank" of the meaning of the borrowed word "at the entrance" to the lexical system of the Russian language. However, the analysis does not confirm these assumptions and leads to the following conclusions: 1) between the meanings of foreign language neologisms and the closest in meaning original words, discrepancies of a denotative nature are found that have no relation to the prestige of the words themselves or their use; 2) when a borrowed word enters the vocabulary of the Russian language, the neologism is usually used exactly in the meaning that the prototype word already has in the source language.
