- Abstract
- Critically examining the well-known theory of V. Streitberg, who asserted that in the Gothic language (as well as in modern Slavic languages) there was a grammatical category of the species realized by means of prefixation (especially with the help of the "empty" prefix ga -), the author of the article based on the analysis of a large amount of factual material shows that the Gothic prefix was not a means of perfection. Given the optional "perfectivating" use of the prefix ga - (and other prefixes), one can conclude that the system of perfectivation in the Gothic language (if it really existed) at the time of translation of the Bible from Greek into Gothic, or was in the process of far-reaching decay, either the emerging tendency in perfectivation was not completed, or there was no category of species at all in Gothic. In this regard, the article attempts to clarify the origin of the Gothic prefix ga - based on the facts of etymology and cultural history.
