- Abstract
- This article describes the morphology and syntax of negative pronouns in Ironian and Digor Ossetian. Comparison of Ossetian data with data from related Iranian and neighboring Caucasian languages, as well as with a large sample of languages of the world, shows that in their morphology and restrictions on compatibility with each other and with verbal negation, Ossetian negative pronouns show nontrivial similarities with ancient Georgian and Svan languages, while while the Ossetian rule for placing negative pronouns in a clause (with rare exceptions, they are placed directly before the verb) has no typological analogues.
