Abstract
The article discusses the recent publication of two Caucasian-Albanian manuscripts found in the collection of medieval palimpsests of St. Catherine's Monastery on Sinai and transcribed and published by an international group of specialists [Gippert et al. 2009]; the publication is accompanied by an extensive reference apparatus. The manuscripts contain the text of the Gospel of John and the Lectionary (a collection of liturgical readings) and are the first monument of the Caucasian-Albanian, or Agvan, language, giving a fairly complete idea of its grammatical structure. The new data fully support the hypothesis that the Caucasian-Albanian language is the historical ancestor of the Udi language. After a brief outline of the history of the study of the Caucasian-Albanian alphabet, a critical review of the publication is carried out, special attention is paid to the grammatical outline of the palimpsest language, as well as the position of the Caucasian-Albanian language among the languages of the Lezghin group of the Nakh-Dagestan family.
