- Abstract
- The concept of a species pair is one of the central concepts of Russian aspectology, around which, however, disputes do not cease, even doubts about its necessity. It is argued that in some cases it is more convenient to operate not with the concept of a species pair, but with the concept of an “aspectual triplet” [Khrakovsky 2005], and sometimes the concept of a species pair is declared obsolete and it is proposed to abandon it altogether in favor of the concept of a “species cluster” [Janda 2007]. Developing the view on the Russian aspectual system, set forth in our works [Zaliznyak, Shmelev 2000; 2001; 2004; Giro-Weber, Mikaelyan 2006], we want to discuss the arguments that give rise to these doubts, so that, having discovered their weak points, we can rehabilitate the concept of a species pair1. In this paper, we make extensive use of the opportunity that has appeared in recent years to test the intuition of a researcher with the help of word usage data in the language of the Russian Internet, which reflect the real language practice of native speakers of the Russian language.
