- Abstract
- The article highlights the state of the study of hydronymy of ancient Baltic origin in the Russian North-West, provides an overview of the archaeological situation in the Ilmen-Volkhov basin, lists the probable hydronymic Baltisms of the region, distributed over the basins of large rivers. the Baltic names of settlements are interpreted, the phenomenon of metonymic tracing of Baltic names by the Slavs is considered, the issues of the northeastern border of the Baltic ethno-linguistic layer are discussed, and the quantitative ratio of Balticism and Finnism in the region. Baltic toponymy is interpreted in connection with the general structure of the pre-Slavic lexical substrate and taking into account the latest archaeological findings.
