- Abstract
- It is known that Russian verbs with the unproductive suffix -a migrate to the class of verbs with the productive suffix -aj-. So, next to the form of the present tense caplet (with the suffix -a-), the form drips (with the suffix -aj-) arose. However, why not all verbs with the -a- suffix undergo this “suffix shift”? The article proposes an explanation for the blocking of suffix shift based on the interaction of three factors: simplification, conformity to the target category, and product-oriented generalizations.
