- Abstract
- In this paper, we propose an overview of the main directions in the framework of the theory of optimality (hereinafter TO) - a phonological model that has gained great popularity in the last 15 years and has found its application not only in phonology. The connection of the TO problematics with the issues discussed in the framework of phonological theories of the 1970s-1980s is shown, as well as new directions in the development of TO. In particular, the work indicates the problems that were first posed within the framework of TO or began to be solved in new ways, such as the problem of mastering grammar from available data or the role of generalizations over surface forms. Problems to the solution of which TO have not yet been successfully applied are briefly discussed, in particular the problem of "opacity".
